This weekend some of Australia’s best and most iconic Ironmen will go head to head in a State of Origin showdown with two teams competing against each other in both the long course and short courses of the Coolangatta Gold 2018.
On Thursday 31 May 2018 Newcastle Surf Life Saver Jess Collins tragically suffered an accident doing what she loves most, surfing with her friends on the Gold Coast. Jess was left face down and paralyzed in the water, remaining conscious as she used her lifeguarding knowledge to hold her breath and stay alive.
Talking about the initiative, Coolie Gold Champion Caine Eckstein spoke about the important of the surf life saving family.
“The surf lifesaving community is tight and when it comes to supporting one and another I think we all step up.” Eckstein said.
“This is Jess’s time to be looked after and while what we are doing this weekend is merely a drop in the ocean in terms of the costs required for her care, hopefully we can raise funds and also make sure that Jess Collins continues to be supported.”
“Everyone loves a State of Origin Showdown and I think we are all up for giving everyone of the best ever.”
To raise Sunflowers for Jess each team will have 4 competitors and have to compete in the short course race on Saturday and long course race on Sunday. The team with the combined fastest time wins. The only twist is that each competitor has to do a different leg during each event.
